The tragedy may have befallen the Kennedy family. President John F. Kennedy’s granddaughter and 8-year-old son are reportedly missing after a boat accident in Chesapeake Bay.
Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, granddaughter of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, went missing with her son Gideon on Thursday afternoon, April 2. The family visited the property of their mother, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, in Shady Side, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. Around noon EST, Maeve and Gideon had “jumped into a canoe” to get out and retrieve a ball that had landed in the water. “They got out more than they could handle and couldn’t get in,” he said. A spokesman for the US Coast Guard USA made us know that the wind in this part of the bay was approximately 26 knots, approximately 30 mph, with waves two to three feet high.
According to David McKean, the search continues, but he wouldn’t tell if the canoe was found. Police with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources said Friday that an overturned canoe had been recovered that matched the description of the missing, according to the Post. Capt. Erik Kornmeyer, a spokesman for Anne Arundel County Firefighters, said a concerned person had called authorities around 4:30 p.m. Thursday to report that they saw the canoe on the Columbia Beach pier.
The appellant, according to the Coast Guard, stated that the sailors “were seen struggling to return to land in a canoe” near Herring Bay, and were then never seen again. The boat and helicopter teams began the search until dusk on Thursday and resumed their search on Friday morning. As of Friday afternoon, the Coast Guard had traveled 2,275 miles, but neither Maeve nor Gideon were found.
Right now, our family is asking for privacy and that everyone keep Maeve and Gideon in their prayers, “family spokesman Alan Fleischmann said in a statement. Maeve turns out to be Fleischmann’s goddaughter.
Maeve is the Executive Director of the Global Health Initiative at Georgetown University, the daughter of former Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and the great-niece of former President John F. Kennedy. Gideon is her first child.
“People think that since I am Kennedy, I am extremely rich and I don’t brag about it. Ha! “He said in 2008.” I have a great name, but when you reach the fourth generation, the money is exhausted. We’re lucky compared to the average American, but I think I’m a trust fund kid, so that’s not true! “
